PRIME TOOLSProfessional self-coaching
For certified nursing assistants
CNA Prime.
Care for the person.
Prime your next move.
Read the care moment. Notice what is guiding you. Choose one small adjustment that helps you meet the person, the task, and the moment with greater clarity.
Care comes first. Use when attention is safely available. Follow your authorized role, care plan, nurse direction, and facility procedures. Never delay urgent help to complete a check.
A little more presence. A clearer next step.
Bring the whole moment into view.
Before care, during an interaction, or after a demanding moment—return to what matters.
Arrive with intention.
Check your energy, expectations, and available support. Bring a clear purpose into the next care moment.
Read the moment ↗See the person.
Notice what is being said, felt, and shown. Let the person’s response inform your next authorized step.
Notice your processing ↗Carry learning forward.
Compare what you expected with what happened. Keep what helped and adjust what the next moment needs.
Reflect and recalibrate ↗Your personal Prime check
Pause. Notice. Choose.
Take about a minute when you can. Reflect on your own processing in one specific care moment.
After care / Close the learning loopWhat happened—and what will I carry forward?
Compare the outcome with your expectation. Include what did not fit, what surprised you, and any support still needed.
Reflection is included when you copy, download, or save your completed Prime note.

Practice with everyday care moments
See what a small shift can look like.
Fictional self-coaching examples. Use them as a starting point for noticing your own response.
Presence
The task is clear.
The person hesitates.
You feel ready to move ahead, but notice hesitation. Broaden your attention to the person’s words, preferences, and what may need clarification.
Support
Several requests.
Limited capacity.
Your attention feels pulled in several directions. Make the competing demands visible and ask the nurse to clarify priorities and available help.
Recalibration
A difficult moment
stays with you.
A strong feeling follows you into the next interaction. Notice its significance, reconnect with your purpose, and identify what support would help.
The XL2 method, in plain language
Locality
Where is your information coming from?
Internal: your experience, expectations, values, and knowledge.
External: the person, the setting, present cues, and feedback.
Polarity
How are you shaping it?
Vertical: clarify, prioritize, and converge on a defined step.
Horizontal: consider relationships, alternatives, and wider context.
Loops
What’s guiding your response?
Cortical / thinking: organize, plan, and compare.
Subcortical / feeling: notice urgency, meaning, motivation, and felt significance.
Adaptive fit: Does this match what the situation requires? Prime, perform, reflect, recalibrate. These paired contributions work together; the useful emphasis can change with the moment.
