Meet the moment with more complete thinking. Notice your state, choose one adjustment, and learn from what follows.
Bring more of the picture into view.
Use a safe pause before training, in a crew conversation, or during an after-action review.
Use during a safe pause, never while driving or during active operations. Follow department training, procedures, and command. This self-coaching tool does not assess fitness for duty or provide tactical guidance.
Your Prime check
Read: What does this moment require? Compare: Where is your information coming from? How are you shaping it? What’s guiding your response? Choose one responsible adjustment, then reflect and recalibrate.

How Firefighter Prime works
Start with the moment, the demand, and the capacity available to you. Use three perspectives to notice your current emphasis and what might help. The goal is a useful fit for the situation; equal emphasis is not always needed.
Connect experience with observation.
Internal experience brings memory, learning, and expectations. External information brings current conditions, other people, and feedback. Ask what each contributes.
Hold the priority and the context.
Vertical processing helps define, prioritize, and commit. Horizontal processing brings relationships, alternatives, and the wider context into view.
Connect thinking with feeling.
Cortical-thinking emphasizes goals and organized responses. Subcortical-feeling emphasizes salience, urgency, and felt importance. Let each inform the other.
Choose one adjustment, act within your role, and return to what actually happened. Retain what helped, revise what did not, and address capacity or support concerns directly.
