Balancing example: a coastal steward notices litter beside an access point, improves an agreed disposal arrangement, then checks comparable litter observations. The observation changes the next response.

Reinforcing example: clear shared observations improve confidence in a process; more people contribute usable observations; the team gains more evidence to refine it. A reinforcing loop could also spread a mistaken belief.

A barrier by itself is not a feedback loop. Name what returns, who receives it, and how it changes the next action.

A difficulty may make a task slow, effortful, or inconsistent. An impairment is a clinically characterized limitation. Participation can also be restricted by inaccessible information, environments, or social arrangements.

The practical response may develop a skill, adapt a task, maintain capacity, or support meaningful participation. A person can need help in one area and contribute expertise in another.

Peak practice means reliable, proportionate, sustainable performance for the chosen purpose. It does not mean constant intensity or the removal of all support.

Recovery: does participation become easier after demand is reduced? Retention: is the useful step available later? Transfer: can it be used in a different setting?

Remain open to feedback, accept useful guidance, and revise a pattern when conditions change. Improvement with a cue is evidence about supported performance; it does not by itself establish biological repair.

Brain Architecture Substrate Interconnected System. BASIS is the living biological substrate: structures, pathways, resources, and operating conditions.

GCOS application: consider usable sensory access, alertness, fatigue, response time, and support needs. Try a clear picture, fewer steps, comfortable pacing, or a partner. These aids support access; they are not biological structures.

Deeper view: local and wide-area connectivity, neural timing, and neuronal–glial–vascular relationships belong to biological investigation. They cannot be inferred from taps in this guide. More stimulation or maximum synchrony is not the goal.

Locality — Internal: memories, knowledge, values, expectations, and imagination. External: present observations, other people, and credible evidence.

Micro-action: compare “I remember a cleaner shore” with “today I noticed one discarded wrapper.” Preserve both accounts and distinguish memory from a current observation.

Keep a stable purpose while allowing new evidence to update it. Neither inward reflection nor outward information is always best.

Polarity — Horizontal: explore relationships, alternatives, context, and affected people. Vertical: define, prioritize, and choose a bounded next step.

Micro-action: consider water, wildlife, livelihoods, and access; then choose just one observation. Reopen the choice if new evidence changes the situation.

Loops — Cortical: goals, plans, comparison, and oversight. Subcortical: salience, felt meaning, motivation, and urgency.

Micro-action: let interest in the sea make the issue meaningful, then use a calm plan to learn from a picture or a permitted viewpoint. Urgency should prompt checking, not an unexamined intervention.

These are functional organizing terms, not a brain scan or a diagnosis of a specific structure.

Encounter something → distinguish relevant features → use a needed operation → form an account → connect and retain it → act and review.

If a step is lost, mark where to return. If alternatives overwhelm, narrow the choice. If an account becomes rigid, compare it with a fresh observation. Support the specific point that is difficult.

Keep usable means, actual effort and outcome, and the person’s own choice distinct. High effort can accompany poor access; low effort can reflect an efficient method or a choice to rest.

Bishop’s Agency Model describes exertion and potential separately. This guide does not assign a numeric agency score. General processing, polarization, reification, mentation, agency, and context help specify a question when more detail is useful.

Begin with a concrete target: “With a picture and a partner, I can choose one ocean feature.” Observe the support, the result, and the cost.

Capacity Architecture: people, time, resources, access routes, records, reserve, and operating conditions. This is the systems counterpart of BASIS, not a claim that a team or ocean has a human brain.

Information Source / Locality: compare the team’s records and assumptions with outside observations and stakeholder accounts. Name the boundary first.

Organizing Mode / Polarity: expand the context enough to include relevant alternatives, then converge on one feasible action.

Regulatory Direction: connect top-down goals and authorized plans with bottom-up observations, discrepancies, and needs. Provide a route through which a local signal can actually change the plan.

System Expression: check what was encountered and retained, selected and understood, carried and resourced, performed and organized. A published plan is not evidence that people could use it.

Within a person: a raw thought can become an idea, a sustained line of thought, and a revisable understanding. Quiet reflection or imagination can be a first fiber.

Between people: shared accounts and coordinated action can connect individual and system perspectives. An imagined benefit remains an idea until observation supports it.

“Fiber,” “thread,” “string,” and “fabric” describe participation and thinking. They are not measures of neural tissue or proof of marine recovery.

The five practice stages in My step are Fiber, Thread, String, Fabric, and Peak practice. They support manageable learning and action; they are not a clinical scale.

Thought Fabric participation connects Fiber → Thread → Weave → Commission layer → Global fabric. A strong string describes a developed line of thought. These describe relationships among ideas and participation, without requiring you to complete every level.

Keeping an invitation here does not advance or unlock the practice stages. A quiet thought can remain your entire contribution.

Participation: could the person choose and complete the step, with what assistance, effort, and later recovery?

Ocean or coastal outcome: what was observed at a defined place and time, with a suitable method and comparison? A participant’s confidence and a tap count do not establish ecological improvement.

Example: compare litter observations at an agreed beach access point under reasonably similar conditions. Include tide, weather, visitor activity, and collection effort. Review the result with local stewards; one visit does not establish a trend or a cause.

Describe the place, purpose, method, support, result, uncertainty, and revision. Share community knowledge and location information only as agreed. Avoid public disclosure of sensitive marine wildlife sites.

Invite another group to adapt and test the idea in its own context. Scaling participation is not a promise of exponential ecological benefit.

Use a photograph or observe from a safe, permitted place on land. Follow current local access, weather, tide, and wildlife guidance. Give wildlife space; avoid feeding, handling, or disturbing it.

No step requires entering the water, climbing onto slippery rocks, approaching wildlife, or handling unknown waste. Follow official beach closures and warnings. Do not judge swimming safety or water quality from appearance. Marine interventions and cleanups need appropriate local guidance, roles, equipment, and permission.

Use photographs or a familiar memory when outdoor access is unsuitable. The scenic images are AI-created illustrations, not local records, safety assessments, or species-identification guides.
